Hi. I haven't received my new 4300 yet but I need to figure this out soon. I don't have a place to park it inside just yet. I'll keep it well covered of course and I don't think anyone will bother it because I'm so far away from the nearest road. However, is there an easy to disable the tractor so that it can't be hotwired and driven off? Any other suggestions for securing it? Thanks for your suggestions.

Unless I'm VERY mistaken, a 4300 is a diesel, in which case it would be very dificult to find a distributor cap, much less remove it......LOL.... However, like most "modern" diesels it likely has an electric fuel shut-off valve, if it is a "normally open valve" merely removing the power to it will prevent it from starting. Other than that there it is easy to instal a master power solenoid or switch, (disconnects the battery) which when engaged will take the battery out of the circuit making the unit 'kiddie-proof'. Peter, Not sure how effective this might be but I always engage the PTO on my tractor when parking it. This prevents anyone who might have the key from starting it easily. I figure that it is "cheap" insurance that can be easily implemented. Regards Mark ....

A bit off topic but when they were resurfacing the road by my house. At night, the contractors just hid the dozer key under the seat. (duh!) Some local teens found the key in the middle of the night, started the dozer, locked it in gear, and hopped off. The dozer ran for over a mile before it finally got stuck against a bank down in creek. It spun its tracks until it ran out of fuel. After that, they did a bit better job in kiddie proofing their equipment! ....

Hello everyone. Well, had some good ideas there. I like the idea of removing the distributor cap and that is the sort of thing I'd like to do. However, since it is a diesal, it isn't practical. However,that is the sort of thing I'm hoping for. The thought of kids messing with it gives me the willies... its my toy! and you leave it alone! :-) I guess some sort of hidden fuel shutoff or some way to remove juice from the starter will be the solution. I don't want to remove the battery because that is too easy to replace if someone really wanted it. But, I guess if they really wanted it badly enough, they'd take it anyway. Ever heard of a GPS system for theft detection? Heard a story recently about a Bobcat so equipped. It was stolen in San Antonio and taken about 100 miles north for some work. It was recovered within 2 hours of it being reported missing. Bet that is an expensive thing to have. Maybe $300 for a year's worth of insurance isn't such a bad deal after all... If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks to everyone responding so far! ....

Peter what a groan I made when I saw the distributor cap thing. Pete if some one wants it, it is gone. All the keys are the same from factory so you could put on a different switch. Construction stuff is the same. A heavy chain with a heavy hardened padlock around steering wheel (turned left or right) to the clutch pedal will do wonders to slow someone down. ....

I had the tractor and implements added to my homeowner’s policy. Exactly what is covered varies from company to company, but theft, vandalism and 3rd party liability are commonly covered. I kept the tractor at our camp (about 10 miles from us) most of last summer. The insurance company did want me to make some effort at security. I parked the tractor and implements behind some bush, and I buried a 12" x 12" x 10' timber 5' deep with a loop of 3/8" grade 70 chain around it. I'd loop a chain end around the rear axle and padlock it. Then, I run another length of chain through each implement and also chain them to the axle. That's not going to stop a determined thief, but it was enough security to satisfy the insurance company. ....

On a 4300 an easy way to disable it is to open the fuse panel (between your legs) pull out the top fuse and move it down to the empty slot right below it for storage, this will prevent the tractor from starting. Hope this helps. ....
